MAISON MOIRE

MAISON MOIRE fabrics, derived from the French term “moiré,” meaning “watered” or “wavy,” our muaré fabric perfectly reflects its distinctive surface effect, shifting beautifully with light. Yet, the heritage of muaré extends far  beyond  French  culture. Its  earliest  examples  can  be traced back to Ancient China, where specialized pressing techniques on silk created this luxurious effect. Over time, the method traveled along the Silk Road through Central Asia to the Middle East and Europe, evolving into a fabric with a unique and enduring identity.

During the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, muaré gained particular prominence in Italy and  France, and  by  the  17th  and 18th  centuries, it  had  become  a  staple of French court fashion. Frequently used in royal attire, ballroom gowns, ecclesiastical garments, and palace décor, muaré has long been a symbol of elegance, power, and prestige.

The signature pattern of moiré is achieved by superimposing fabrics with the same weave and pressing them under high pressure, creating a flowing, wavy surface that changes with light. While the most classic examples are crafted from silk, modern iterations also incorporate viscose, acetate, and polyester fibers, maintaining the fabric’s luxurious appeal.

Today, moiré fabrics are celebrated across fashion, used for jacket linings, evening gowns, and accessories; interior design, including curtains, upholstery, and wall coverings; and even luxury packaging and bookbinding. Particularly for brands embracing heritage, classic, and couture aesthetics, moiré remains a timeless and powerful reference.
